Syfy officially announced the renewal of "12 Monkeys" for its fourth and final season.

Entertainment Weekly revealed that the network officially called for a season 4 renewal prior to the release of the third installment of the mystery sci-fi drama, which will premiere in May.

The network also made a surprising move when it announced that all the 10 episodes of "12 Monkeys" season 3 will be aired in just three nights, beginning with four episodes on May 19, Friday, then three episodes will be released on May 20, Saturday, and May 21, Sunday. Fans can start binge-watching all the episodes from season 3 at 8 p.m. EDT.

NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment president and chief content officer Jeff Wachtel talked about their plans for the series in a statement, saying that the success of 12 Monkeys can be credited to the amazing storytelling that was introduced by Terry Matalas and its amazing cast and crew.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer fans an opportunity to binge the third season as a reward for their lasting support, and we couldn't be more excited to see where Terry takes us with the final chapter of this fabulous story in the fourth season," Wichtel also said.

The events of "12 Monkeys" season 3 will kick off months after the Army of the 12 Monkeys abducted Cassie (Amanda Schull), who also learned that she is the Witness' mother.

A separate report also hints about the role that "Back to the Future" star Christopher Lloyd will play in the series. According to the report, Lloyd will portray the role of Pallid Man's (Tom Noonan) father.

Matalas also revealed that there are a lot of similarities between Lloyd's character and Pallid Man. "They're willing to do horrible things with the kindest of smiles. Pallid Man got that from his father, and also his mother, [played by] Scottie Thompson, who we met last season, who also returns in that episode," the executive producer stated. "You really get to see the Pallid family, if you will, and see there was no way that guy was going to grow up right."

The network is expected to release "12 Monkeys" season 4 sometime in 2018.
