Sunday's 2014 American Music Awards (AMAs) held in Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre was the setting for the top contemporary music artists of today, from Beyonce to One Direction.

The show was opened by a high-production performance by Taylor Swift for a song called 'Blank Space.' Despite the expensive-looking on stage props, Swift's sound was lacking in quality.

Another performer who suffered from the production's poor audio quality was Charlie XCX, who sang two songs for the night.

The first award for the night went to British boy band One Direction, who nabbed the acclaim for Favorite Pop Rock Band, Duo, or Group. Since the results of the award show are based on votes, the millions of teenage girls from around the world, that the group counts as fans, made sure to do their part by voting for One Direction.

Iggy Azalea nabbed the award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album, and was considered one of the most important acts of the nights with multiple awards and performance for her hit, 'Fancy.' Favorite Pop Rock Male Artist went to Sam Smith, while Favorite Country Male Artist went to Luke Bryan.

Lorde performed the soundtrack for the latest Hunger Games flick, 'Mockingjay - Part 1' in such a timely manner that she truly made her mark in the contemporary music industry. Aside from giving a stellar performance, Lorde won Favorite Pop Rock Artist, Female.

Favorite Alternative Rock Artist went to Imagine Dragons, who also performed their song 'I Bet My Life.'

Taylor Swift won the first ever Dick Clark Award of Musical Excellence award, which was presented by Diana Ross.
