McLaren has unveiled the new 650S Spider Can-Am edition sports car to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Can-Am racing series. The inaugural season of the Can-Am series was held in 1966.

The McLaren 650S Spider Can-Am will be limited edition, with only 50 units being produced globally. The McLaren sports car features livery and decals that pay tribute to their original racing car, which triumphed from 1967 to 1971. The Can-Am inspired 650S Spider was created in partnership with the McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

"Can-Am racing is a major part of McLaren heritage, and this latest model from McLaren Special Operations pays homage to the cars and the racers who played a key role in making the championship such a spectacle during the 1960s and 70s," said Paul MacKenzie, Executive Director of MSO.

The sports car is infused with carbon fiber elements, specifically in its bonnet, airbrake, and front spoiler, rear bumper, door blades and sills. For the first time in the British luxury automaker's history, the sports car will feature a carbon-fiber folding hardtop.

The 650S Spider also features lightweight forged alloy wheels with a gloss black finish, diamond cut rims and optional titanium bolts. The new carbon front wing louvers also serve to reduce pressure from the front axle and increase the car's downforce. An improved stainless steel exhaust system with quad pipes also give the car a nice and unique sound.

Given these unique features, the Can-Am limited edition sports car is able to stand out among its other 650S Spider siblings.

Under the hood, the powertrain components remain the same. The McLaren 650S Can-Am is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that produces 641 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. The sports car can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds and attain a top speed of 204 mph.

McLaren's new limited edition car comes in three colors – Mars Red, Papaya Shark, and Onyx Black. It comes with a $334,500 price tag and will be released by Spring 2016.
