Mazda has announced that the 2016 Mazda3 will be receiving one more powertrain option for its hatchback and fastback models. The 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D diesel engine made its debut in the Mazda2 and will now be offered for the Mazda3. 

Prospective Mazda3 owners can now opt for the new 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D diesel engine, which produces 103 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. The new engine allows the Mazda3 to go from 0 to 62 mph in 11 seconds. The 1.5-liter Mazda 3 can also attain a top speed of 116 mph. 

The 1.5-liter engine is mated with a 6-speed SkyActiv-MT manual gearbox. Only the Mazda3 hatchback can be outfitted with a 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission. 

The Mazda3's new engine not only performs well but it also gives improved fuel efficiency figures. It is rated at 74.3 mpg for U.K. driving and emits 99 g/km of CO2 emissions. 

The new Mazda3 engine will be made available in the U.K. market starting early December and it will be priced at £18,895 which is about $28,500 when converted. Mazda has not yet annouced whether the new engine option will be available in other markets.

In the U.S., the 2016 Mazda3 is powered by a 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G petrol that produces 155 horsepower or by a 2.2-liter SkyActiv-D diesel engine that produces 184 horsepower. 

No matter the engine, however, the Mazda3 continues to be one of the best vehicles in the market. Car and Driver magazine has just announced that the 2016 Mazda 3 has been included in the magazine's 10Best awards for 2015. The Mazda 3 nameplate has earned six Car and Driver 10Best awards since being introduced in the market in 2004. 

The 2016 Mazda3 is now available for purchase. The base i Sport trim is priced at $17,845. The car comes standard with leather seats, 16-inch wheels, power folding side-view mirrors and a rearview backup camera. For added features, customers can opt for the three higher trim levels - the i Touring trim ($20,045), the i Grand Touring trim ($22,545) and the S Touring trim ($24,795).
