2016 Volvo XC90 news: Software update brings Apple Carplay to luxury crossover

Owners of the 2016 Volvo XC90 can now experience Apple Carplay in their vehicles. The Apple CarPlay software is now available for the luxury crossover through a software update.

"The Apple CarPlay experience enhances the award-winning user interface already available on the XC90 and just announced S90 sedan. The Sensus Connect touchscreen gives us flexibility to update software and add features to cars after they have been delivered to customers. This is an important part of our commitment to long-term customer satisfaction," said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America.

Before the update, drivers would switch in and out of Apple Carplay and Volvo's Sensus Connect 9-inch touchscreen system. With the new software update, both systems have been integrated.

The Sensus Connect platform now works with a four-tile system. Each tile gives access to one feature like navigation or Apple CarPlay. When the tile is selected, it expands and gives the driver more options. Even though Apple CarPlay is selected, it does not take up the whole screen.

Drivers will also need to activate CarPlay on their mobile devices before it can be launched in the car. For those who do not want the feature, the fourth tile can be occupied by other third-party applications.

Customers who purchased their XC90 before Nov. 23 will be able to receive the software update for free. They only need to make an appointment with their local dealers. For those who have received their vehicles at a later date, they will need to pay $300 for the software update. Installation will take less than an hour.

All XC90 customers will also receive a free courtesy update that gives access to other third-party apps like Pandora, Yelp and Find Parking. The update also includes updated navigation maps and traffic information.

Apple CarPlay will also be available for the 2017 Volvo S90 luxury sedan. The S90 will make its official debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January.
