2017 Volkswagen Tiguan news: VW confirms plans for Tiguan family expansion; larger 7-seat SUV and stylish coupe set to enter production

With the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan going on sale in the next few months, Volkswagen will be producing additional models to join the second-generation Tiguan and thus, expanding its SUV family. Dr. Jochen Böhle, Volkswagen head for product development, recently confirmed the news at a Tiguan launch event earlier this week.

"We are planning to introduce a whole family of Tiguan models in coming years. Tiguan has developed into a sub-brand, and we intend to build it," said Böhle. Volkswagen's decision to develop Tiguan as a sub-brand is similar to what Hyundai initially did with its now separate Genesis luxury brand.

According to Autocar, Volkswagen is planning to introduce a larger seven-seat version of the Tiguan by 2017. It will come with slightly larger dimensions – a 110 mm-longer wheelbase and a longer rear overhang. The larger Tiguan SUV will be built using the MQB A2 platform, similar to Skoda's upcoming Kodiak SUV. Manufacturing will reportedly take place in China and Mexico.

Then, in 2018, Volkswagen will introduce a five-door coupe based on the 2017 Tiguan SUV. It will feature the same wheelbase and built using the same MQB platform. Production of the coupe will most likely be in Europe. When released, the stylish coupe will rival the Range Rover Evoque and the Mazda CX-5.

"It is a very exciting car, the coupe. Dr. Diess is very strong behind this model, and it's looking fantastic," Bohle added.

Unlike the SUV model, the Tiguan Coupe will be more road-focused and may not get the same off-road capabilities as the standard SUV.

Böhle also denied plans of developing an R-variant of the Tiguan SUV. However, he did hint that the R model could be arriving for the Tiguan Coupe.

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV will arrive at dealers this April 2016. The newly confirmed Tiguan large SUV and Coupe are expected to follow in the next few years. Stay tuned for more additional information.
