Though Charlie Hunnam passed on playing Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of '50 Shades of Grey,' the "Sons of Anarchy" actor praised the movie and called it "sophisticated," in contrast to its reputation as "mommy porn."

When actor Charlie Hunnam appeared at the Television Critics Association press tour, he spoke about the upcoming movie, 50 Shades of Grey, adapted from the novels of E.L. James.

Hunnam was initially picked to portray the book's lead character, Christian Grey, but backed out due to scheduling conflicts and other commitments. Hunnam is currently busy playing Jax Teller in the show that ultimately made him a household name, FX's 'Sons of Anarchy.'

Hunnam defended the movie against its critics who say that it borders on being a "mommy porn" type of film.

"I think people really do that book a disservice when they reduce it to that type of talk," said the actor during the panel discussion, as reported by The Chicago Tribune.

"What (E.L. James) actually created is a really sophisticated dynamic and presented it in a package which was accessible to people who normally would be terrified of that subject ... Actually, what she did was pretty brilliant," the actor added.

Hunnam also talked about how he could have played the role, a role that was filled in by actor and model Jamie Dorman a month after he dropped out of the project.

"I would've brought a certain rugged charm to (the role) but believe me, he's going to do just fine," said the actor, describing Dorman.
