Sad news for all "American Horror Story" fans; the show's doyenne, Jessica Lange, will not be returning to the show.

The venerable actress recently appeared on the Charlie Rose show and talked about her role in the play "Long Day's Journey into Night" and whether she will return to the horror anthology.

"No, I had four years with that, four seasons, and each year was a marvelous character," Lange explained. "Everything changed from one year to another which made it very interesting to me."

Unfortunately, while every role was interesting, the 67-year-old believes the time is right to move on from the hit series.

This is certainly a surprise for fans who were hoping that the Emmy Award-winning actress would come back for another season, especially since "American Horror Story" showrunner Ryan Murphy hinted that Lange would come back if they come up with a character that would catch her interest.

Her "American Horror Story" collaboration with Murphy might be at an end, but the two will be working together on "Feud," a new anthology that reportedly takes its name from Bette Davis and Joan Crawford's notorious feud on the set of "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"

Lange's absence will still be missed, even though Lady Gaga was able to step in into her shoes in last season's "American Horror Story: Hotel." The singer has been confirmed to be back next season, along with Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Angela Bassett.

"American Horror Story" will reportedly have a smaller cast in its sixth season, according to Finn Wittrock. The actor, who had double roles in "Hotel," told The Wrap that despite his heavy schedule, he still wants to do Murphy's series, even if it's just a few episodes. He also gave hints as to where the new season is headed.

"I have heard it is going to be a little tighter — there were so many story lines in the last one and it was so big and epic, I have a feeling it might be a little more claustrophobic," he said. "A smaller cast."

No release date has been set yet for "American Horror Story" season 6, but based on the past seasons, fans are expecting the show to return in October.
