Google will be announcing the latest iteration of its mobile operating system, currently codenamed Android M, at the company's annual I/O developer conference, which kicks off on Thursday, May 28. This was confirmed by Google's VP of Engineering for Android, Hiroshi Lockeimer in an interview with Fast Company, when he also revealed that Android fans would be seeing a new version of the build every year.

The latest iteration of Google's mobile operating system, Android 6.0 is currently codenamed Android M and is set to be one of the biggest announcements at the company's annual I/O developer conference. Last year at Google I/O in June, Google had unveiled Android 5.0 as 'Android L' and later named it as 'Lollipop'. Google is reportedly using an internal code name for Android M, called "Macadamia Nut Cookie" (MNC), which has appeared in AOSP as "mnc-dev".

Lockheimer did not reveal any actual Android M features during the interview, but confirmed that "this year we'll launch M." Lockheimer also confirmed that Google would release a major Android update every year, as it will now be adopting a "yearly cadence of big releases, so, for instance, one year we release J, the next year we release K, and then the year after that L." This means that the release of Android M in 2015 will be followed by Android N around this time next year, while Android O will be subsequently launched in summer 2017 and so on.

Speaking about the future of the Android ecosystem, Lockheimer revealed that apart from putting Android on more devices, Google wanted smart Android-powered devices that could talk to each other so that they could offer new, better features which are currently not available. "The trick is not to think about them in isolation... It's really about thinking about these different screens, if you will, holistically. How do they work with each other? A watch, and a phone, and a TV, and a car, and a tablet, how can they coordinate, and how can they actually enrich our lives, and make things that were harder before more useful?", explained Lockheimer.

Stay tuned for the latest news, announcements and happenings at the Google's annual developer's conference, where the new mobile OS Android M is expected to be unveiled.
