Android One: Google plans $105 mobile phone launch in India

Android One has released a new line of low-cost smartphones in New Delhi, India, as a push forward to their goal of convincing the emerging markets to upgrade their devices.

"Android One is designed to provide a faster, smoother, more responsive experience. And each phone comes with the features people expect in the markets where they're available," according to Android One's official website.

The smartphones' value start at $105, giving more people access to Google's Android platform minus the expensive price tag.

"Our goal was to develop high quality smartphones at an affordable price, with access to connectivity, done at scale around the world," Android head Sundar Pichai told reporters during the launch.

Google has more than a billion Android users as of the moment, and Android One is their toll to snatch their next billion.

"For Google, a strong uptake of Android One smartphones should increase the access to the Internet and Google's suite of products," said Bhasker Canagaradjou, associate director at Ipsos SA's business consulting in India.

Reuters reported that the Mountain View-based company hooked up with Indian handset makers Micromax, Karbonn and Spice Mobiles "to launch the 6,399 rupees phone".

After India, Google is headed to the Philippines, Indonesia and other South Asian countries.

The development of Android One smartphones has resulted in global partnerships with the likes of HTC, Lenovo, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Mediatek, Asus, Acer and more.

"When (handset companies) look to make a phone, they will get a menu. They can put together a device in a much quicker fashion, knowing we've already tested the software," Sundar Pichai said.

Android One handsets currently sport the following specs: 4.5-inch display, 1GB of RAM, 5MP rear-facing camera, 2MP front-facing camera, micro-SD slot, built-in FM radio, replaceable battery and quadcore processor from Mediatek.

The smartphone will also has the ability to run the next version of Android, including Android L that will be released soon.
