Google's Android Wear 2.0 is scheduled for an Oct. 15 release date, according to reports, as Microsoft launches its free OneNote app on the wearable OS.

"What's coming in Wear 2.0? Probably a lot of bug fixes, and likely some new features, but we don't have specifics at this point. This update will seemingly be timed well with the release of the Moto 360 and G Watch R, Wear's two first 'fashion-forward' watches, so it could be related to readiness for this new hardware. We'll just have to wait and see," wrote David Ruddock of Android Police.

Rumors mills also mentioned of OneNote support for Android Wear 2.0, following Microsoft's announcement that the app will be available for both Android and iOS:

"One of our primary goals is to help you capture ideas and information in new and innovative ways. Features like Quick Notes, Cortana, and Office Lens have made it easy to preserve those flashes of brilliance and today we're adding Android Wear watches. Simply install the free OneNote for Android Wear app from the Play Store and start dictating notes to your heart's desire," the official Microsoft Office Blog said.

Android Wear is specifically designed to power smartwatches and wearable devices such as Google Glass.

The original version was released on March 18, but as the competition with Apple toughens, rumors about an updated version of the operating system proliferate online.

Apple has recently unveiled the Apple Watch lineup, which will be released starting January of 2015.

The health and fitness element will be a major determinant of who is going to win the battle.

For this reason, Google might want to realign their updates with this consumer demand.

"Nobody wants to wear more than one thing on their wrist. Fitness has been the most tangible, if evolutionary, feature for any wearable gadget. Android Wear, unusually, has downplayed fitness for the time being," CNET reports.

Android Wear is the OS that powers Samsung Gear Live, LG G Watch and Moto 360, among others.
