Apple iPhone news update: Android, Blackberry and Windows phone owners offered discounts on new iPhone for trade-in

Apple's Reuse and Recycling Program is now allowing customers to trade in their Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone smartphones in exchange for credit towards an iPhone, according to a report based on a note found on Apple's retail store page.

Apple's earlier trade-in program launched in 2013 was restricted to old iPhones which could be exchanged for a discount of up to $175 on the purchase of a brand new iPhone. The trade-in program has now been expanded to include non-iPhones as well and selected smartphone models made by Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony, BlackBerry and Nokia can be exchanged for credit toward the purchase of an iPhone 5C, 5S, 6 or 6 Plus.

The exact amount of credit that will be offered for other smartphones is not yet known, but is likely to be based on various parameters, such as display quality, button quality, overall hardware damage, engraving, liquid damage and its ability to be powered on and used normally. Apple is reportedly running the program through a US-based privately held corporation called Brightstar that distributes mobile phones and other devices.

Apple's move to expand its trade-in program to include non-iPhones comes at a time when Samsung is getting ready for the global launch of its new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on April 10. This indicates that Apple is trying to convince Samsung users to upgrade from their Galaxy S5 to an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus instead of a Galaxy S6.

The trade-in program will be available both online and in-store Apple stores, and it already live in several countries including, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Italy and the United States. Apple is likely to expand the program to more countries if it proves successful at converting more users of Android, BlackBerry or Windows smartphones into happy iPhone customers.
