Amid the big revelations coming out of the turf of Apple, Inc., the venerable Apple TV has received a minor update to version 7 software.

"The biggest addition is an all-new app for Beats Music, the subscription music service Apple acquired earlier this year. The interface is similar to that of other Apple TV apps, with a grid of thumbnails for album art, access to playlists, and the Just For You section with customized recommendations," CNET reports.

Apple TV has also introduced the "family sharing" update where at least six members of the family can watch movies and television shows from each other's iTunes library.

Aside from the Beats Music app, the miniconsole also added Showtime Anytime, Fox Now, NFL Now and CNBC.

The channels will join the biggest names in entertainment, including NetFlix, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, Watch ABC, Watch ESPN, NBA, A&E, History, Lifetime, Disney Channel and more.

Meanwhile, Apple's top executive has expressed disappointment over the present day situation of television.

"TV is one that we continue to have great interest in – I choose my words carefully there – TV is one of those things that, if we're really honest, it's stuck back in the seventies," Tim Cook said, in an appearance on the US Charlie Rose show.

He added, "Think about how much your life has changed, and all the things around you that has changed. And yet TV, when you go in your living room to watch the TV, or wherever it might be, it almost feels like you're rewinding the clock and you've entered a time capsule and you're going backwards. The interface is terrible. I mean, it's awful!"

While Steve Jobs successor has hinted that Apple will venture into future developments around television, he refused to provide any premature details.

"I don't want to get into what we're doing in the future. We've taken stabs with Apple TV, and Apple TV now has over 20m users, so it has far exceeded the hobby label that we placed on it," Cook told Rose.

The first generation of Apple TV was released in 2007, while the second generation arrived three years later.

The third generation and third generation Rev A were launched in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
