The Apple Watch might have recently dominated the market, but other similar devices, like the Sony Smartwatch 3 already have a huge fan base that Apple seemingly cannot tap into. Here is how the first wearable device from Apple compares to the third Sony Smartwatch.

Design

The Apple Watch comes in three lines: the Apple Watch Sport, the midrange Apple Watch and the super costly Apple Watch Edition and the watches' square bodies from all lines come in two sizes: 38 mm and 42 mm. The materials used in the construction of the device also depend on the line. Apple uses anodized aluminum for the Apple Watch Sport, stainless steel for the Apple Watch and solid rose or yellow gold for the Edition line. In terms of straps, there are a number of options available including Fluoroelastomer, leather and stainless steel. However, the Apple Watch only comes with an IPX7 rating, which means it can only withstand splashes and cannot be submereged in water.

The Smartwatch 3 from Sony has a rectangular steel body polished in silver. While the body gives the device a sleek design, the default straps for the device are made of plastic. However, the plastic strap can be easily swapped out and replaced with leather or stain steel straps available specifically for the device. A big advantage of the Smartwatch 3 is its built-in GPS feature and IP68 rating which means that the watch can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.

Display

The 42 mm Apple Watch has a screen size of 1.5 inches with a resolution of 312 x 390 pixels and a density of 302 pixels per inch while the 38 mm version has screen size of 1.32 inches, a resolution 272 x 340 pixels and a density of 290 pixels per inch. The Smartwatch 3 has a Transflective display measuring 1.6 inches with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels.

Specs

On the Apple Watch is an S1 chip which includes a whole computer. It has 8 GB of onboard storage out of which 2 GB can be utilized for storing music. The Smartwatch 3, on the other hand, has an ARM A7 CPU with four cores clocked at 1.2 Ghz along with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of onboard storage.

Sensors

The Apple Watch comes with a heart rate sensor, which its competitor lacks. It also has an ambient light sensor, accelerometer and gyroscope. On the Smartwatch 3 is an ambient light sensor, accelerometer, compass and gyroscope.

Price

The Apple Watch starts at $350 and goes as high as $17,000. The Sony Smartwatch 3 costs $250.
