Apple's MacBook Pro 2016 release date: new line replacing MacBook Air?

Apple's MacBook has long been a staple in the tech industry, with two distinct lineups under its belt — the Pro and the Air. However, recent rumors claim that given the MacBook Pro's popularity and general advantage over its cheaper counterpart, Apple could decide to scrap the Air entirely.

Despite rumors floating around of a MacBook Air 2016 coming up this year, reports are now claiming that the MacBook Pro 2016 will become the company's sole flagship. However, there is some sound reasoning behind these speculations.

For one thing, Apple has not released any updates for the MacBook Air since 2015, leading many to believe that the Cupertino tech company has shelved the lineup entirely. Additionally, considering the expectations that the new MacBook Pro will be much lighter and thinner than all of its predecessors, the MacBook Air may be getting the boot soon since it is famously known for being lighter and thinner.

However, there are also those who believe that the MacBook Air will still continue to be produced. After all, the MacBook Air is Apple's answer to a cheaper version of the Pro. With Apple reportedly experiencing a rapid drop in PC sales this year, it is going to need a less expensive variation of its models.

As for the release date of the MacBook Pro 2016, it is generally perceived to be landing sometime in the last quarter of this year. It was previously reported that the MacBook Air 2016 will be arriving earlier than its Pro equivalent.

The new MacBook Pro is expected to have a SkyLake processor and a retina display. An interesting addition to the upcoming device, however, is an OLED bar that will be strategically placed above the laptop's keyboard. This touchscreen OLED bar will give users easy access to their applications. The upcoming model is expected to come in 11-inch and 15-inch versions.

Of course, since nothing has been officially confirmed by Apple, it would be best for tech enthusiasts to take this news with a grain of salt.
