'Avatar 2' update: Stephen Lang reveals start of production for the sequel

(Facebook/Avatar)Filming for all "Avatar" sequels will start soon, and "Avatar 2" is scheduled for release sometime in 2018.

During a panel at last week's Wizard World Comic Con, actor Stephen Lang revealed that filming for "Avatar 2" will start early next year, and that filming of all sequels will be done simultaneously.

Lang attended the event to promote his film "Don't Breathe," but panel host Bruce Campbell took the opportunity to ask about "Avatar 2" and the delays in making the sequels. The latter also questioned Lang about the extent of his participation in the franchise.

Lang said, "As the New Year turns, we start to shoot for the 'Avatar' sequels." He added, "I think that the whole process of making the films and opening the films will go to about 2023."

In "Avatar," Lang played Colonel Miles Quaritch, the first movie's villain who died in the climax. Creator and director James Cameron said, "Steven was so memorable in the first film, we're privileged to have him back." It has not yet been revealed how he will be resurrected when the movie returns, but the director shared, "His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga." The statement has led to rumors saying that Lang will be the lead in the subsequent films.

"Avatar" holds the record for being the highest grossing film of all time since it was released in 2009. Two sequels were initially planned, with the first one set to premiere in 2014. However, many reasons were cited for the delays, such as artistic decisions and not wanting to go head to head with another popular movie franchise.

It was then revealed that there will be three more sequels and that the movies will be shot simultaneously. Cameron said, "It's not back-to-back. It's really all one big production. It's more the way you would shoot a miniseries. So we'll be shooting across all 'Avatar' scripts simultaneously."

"Avatar 2" is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2018.
