'Avatar 2' release date, updates: Stephen Lang says filming starts in early 2017

(Facebook/Avatar)Filming for all "Avatar" sequels will start soon with the films scheduled to be released two years after another starting 2018.

The much-awaited James Cameron film "Avatar 2" is expected to hit theaters in 2018 after being delayed for several times. Actor Stephen Lang, who plays Col. Miles Quaritch, recently shared about the film's production.

It has been nearly seven years since the first "Avatar" film came out. Although the second installment was supposed to release in 2013, it has then been delayed for a couple of more times and the latest initial release is in 2018. Lang who will return for his role Col. Quaritch revealed on the film's current progress in an interview with Ain't It Cool.

The actor said, "Yeah, the reading of things. We're getting there. We're in good shape. We'll be starting certainly early in the new year. But you know, the thing is, as you can imagine with a film like Avatar, it's not like the work hasn't been going on. The design, the production design, the various worlds, and creatures and environments, that's all being worked on."

Lang also revealed that the entire team, under Cameron's leadership, has been working on the massive four sequels ever since the first film's release. Also, the actor shared about Cameron's eagerness to achieve something so bad that he ends up needing a yet-to-be-invented technology.

He added that the director enjoys creating insurmountable problems and gathering people who want to take part in it. He admitted that it requires a huge amount of effort, but he assures that "it's going to be an absolute joy to behold."

In an interview with Screen Rant last July, Cameron revealed that he is still in the middle of writing the story. He said that they have finished writing for "Avatar 4" and will be polishing "Avatar 5."

Cameron has previously explained that filming for the four sequels is done simultaneously, which is likely why there has been so much delay for the next film.

"Avatar 2" is expected to hit theaters in December 2018.
