The sequel to the record-breaking film "Avatar" is now in progress, according to its creator.

Creator, director, producer, or simply the genius behind the breakthrough film "Avatar," James Cameron, finally gave an update on the film's development. While attending the L.A. premiere of a New Zealand film titled "The Dark Horse," Associated Press caught up with the filmmaker who shared that they are now working on motion capture.

He said "Well, we do performance capture work. It's a long – it's -- you have to think of it more like an animated film, so it's not really shooting per se," and went on to explain, "It's a lot of performance capture work, so yeah, we're getting into that."

When asked what else he can share about "Avatar 2's" progress, he said, "Absolutely nothing … it's top secret." Then he compared the film to a historical project saying, "It's like, remember 'The Manhattan Project?' Did they talk about that?"

For the benefit of those who have no idea what "The Manhattan Project" is, it is a research and development project done in 1942 through 1945, which led to the creation of the first atomic bomb and other nuclear weapons.

It is not surprising for Cameron to compare the sequel to an explosive moment in history as the first film "Avatar" had gone through extensive development itself. Production had to be delayed as technology needed for his vision was not yet available at that time. The technology referred to is what he mentioned in the interview, the motion capture filming technique.

Motion capture makes use of sensors attached to the body or other objects to record movement. The movement is then translated into other animation process so that fictional characters like the Na'vis look real. Cameron and his team of experts have successfully incorporated this technique in two of the highest-grossing movies of all time, "Avatar" and "Titanic," respectively.

Cameron is known to be a perfectionist, and while fans have been anxious for the sequel, his works have always proven to be worth moviegoers' time.
