'Bachelor' Season 19's Chris and Whitney part ways; Odds against couples from Reality Shows

(ABC)

There is no happy ending for "The Bachelor" Chris Soules and Whitney Bischoff, who have broken off their engagement after only a few months. An official statement was released by Soules' representative to Access Hollywood.

"Whitney Bischoff and Chris Soules have mutually and amicably decided to end their engagement. They part with nothing but respect and admiration for one another and will continue to be supportive friends. They wish to thank everyone who has supported them through this journey."

Although this comes as no surprise, considering the track record of "couplings" formed on reality shows like "The Bachelor" and similar franchises, the odds are stacked against any couple achieving a long-term relationship. Most have lasted only a couple of months after their show completes filming. Only one resulted in an actual wedding – season 17's Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici, who even got married on live TV. Well, there were actually two weddings, but the other was between Season 13's Jason Mesnick and the woman he did not pick in the final rose ceremony, Molly Malaney. Mesnick famously dumped the woman he picked, Melissa Rycroft and then asked Malaney for coffee a few minutes later.

In the case of Bischoff, a fertility nurse, and Soules, a farmer, there were already some clues that their union would not last. PEOPLE spoke to the couple before the 19th season finale of the show and the pervading theme of the interview pointed to the fact that Soules used "logic" to choose Bischoff. He apparently had equal feelings for her and runner-up Becca Tilley, but a relationship with Tilley would be more complicated and challenging. Soules' father  alleged that his son was really in love with Tilley but since Bischoff was the sure thing (Tilley was not committed to move to Iowa, where Soules is from, while Bischoff lived in Chicago and was ready to settle down), it apparently all boiled down to what makes more sense and practical.
