Battlefield 5 release date: Exec confirms game to return to military-themed game roots

The upcoming action-adventure game Battlefield 5 is going back to its military roots on its release date in 2016, dissimilar to the cops and robbers-themed Battlefield Hardline.

"That will be a return to a Battlefield military-style game; more to come on that," Electronic Arts (EA) CFO Blake Jorgensen during the 2014 UBS Global Technology Conference, as reported by Gamespot.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson has earlier confirmed that Battlefield 5 is not seeing the light until 2016. This is to give room for Battlefield 4 and the upcoming Battlefield Hardline, which will be commercially launched on March 17, 2015, for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

This is quite atypical to EA's tradition of annualizing major titles, which has been done for Call of Duty and other games. An analyst that believes the delay could make the studio avoid "market fatigue" approved this decision.

"We think the decision to move Battlefield 5 will optimize the potential for the Battlefield franchise (and avoid franchise fatigue), and also should result in a more consistent revenue/EPS growth pattern for EA," Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said.

Battlefield Hardline, on the other hand, will tackle drug war in the bustling streets of Miami. The game has both single-player and multi-player options. For the latter, user can choose to either be the good guy or the villain. Either way, teamwork will be essential.

Meanwhile, EA is planning to launch Star Wars: Battlefront to cover for the holidays in 2015, while players eagerly await the introcuction of Battlefield 5.
