Blackberry DTEK50 release date, specs, features: New Android-based phone is the 'most secure' in the world

(BlackBerry)BlackBerry DTEK50, BlackBerry's newest midrange smartphone, is set to release on Aug. 8.

BlackBerry continues to compete in the smartphone industry after introducing its first-ever Android-based smartphone, Priv. Now, the Canadian firm is set to bring yet another device dubbed as the "most secure Android smartphone" in the world.

BlackBerry will soon release DTEK50 – the device that will have top-notch security features for only half the price of the Priv. Priv was supposed to be the saving grace of the company, but according to a report from Digital Trends, the first Android device from the company didn't fare well mostly because of its hefty price tag. The next device though is expected to improve BlackBerry's sales as it failed to meet their profit goals when Priv was released.

The DTEK50 is actually not a uniquely new phone. According to CNET, this device is an exact copy of the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 4. When it comes to specs, the DTEK50 has a 5.2-inch 1080p screen and runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset. This is coupled with 3 GB of RAM. The device carries a 2,610 mAh battery unit and has 13-megapixel and 8-megapixel rear and front cameras respectively. The front camera also has a flash to improve selfie captures.

The main difference when it comes to appearance is that the DTEK50 has a textured plastic case on its back, as opposed to a glass material. The black color of the device is not even a new feature because the Idol 4 can also come in the same color.

Although the features and specs are mostly based on the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 4, BlackBerry is relying on the advanced security of the DTEK50 as its main selling point. The phone has a DTEK app that monitors potential risks to users' privacy as well as generates information on how users can improve the security of their phone and when they should do it.

The BlackBerry DTEK50 will be released on Aug. 8. It remains to be seen if it will indeed give hope to BlackBerry's future in the industry.
