British Prime Minister David Cameron is arguably wooing the faith vote ahead of the country's General Election after a visit to Christians and Sikhs over the weekend.

Cameron quoted from the Gospel of Matthew in front of thousands of Christians at the Festival of Life in London, according to the Christian Today website.

"Together we are all part of one family. As Jesus said with his arms outstretched to his disciples: 'Here are my mother and my brothers, for whoever does the will of my father in heaven is my brother, my sister and my mother'," he said.

"And that is what we are, as God's children we are all one big family."

He praised Christians for their commitment to serving the common good and said they were the "Big Society in action", referring to his Big Society initiative to get more Britons involved in public service.

"You've proved that church is people, church is a family, and it doesn't matter what the roof is made of, because with your energy, your devotion, your love of Jesus Christ, you raise that roof every time," he said.

Unlike in the US, religion and politics in Britain rarely mix, and politicians must tread a careful line between courting the faith community while assuring the non-religious that they show no favoritism.

Nonetheless, Cameron has appeared less embarassed to speak about his Christian faith than other politicians and former prime ministers.

He told the gathering: "Tonight let us be proud that this is a Christian country, where we stand for the freedom to practice your faith, and where we stand up for Christians and all those who are persecuted anywhere in our world, they are family too."

In his concluding remarks at the Festival of Life, he said his prayer was that the more than two hundred schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, in Nigeria, last year would be brought home safely.

On Saturday, the PM was with Sikhs and spent part of the day with his wife Samantha at the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, where he was pictured kneeling in prayer.

"Wishing a happy Vaisakhi to everyone celebrating. Thank you to the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara for their warm welcome," he tweeted.
