Brooklyn Nets free agency, trade rumors 2016: Dion Waiters remains top target

(Reuters/Mark D.Smith/USA Today Sports)The Brooklyn Nets remain interested in guard Dion Waiters.

Earlier in the free agency period, the Brooklyn Nets were already eyeing Dion Waiters and met with him. Now that he is an unrestricted free agent after the Oklahoma City Thunder rescinded their qualifying offer to him, the team's interest for the guard remains the same.

According to reports, when the Nets had a meeting with Waiters, there was nothing much they could do since he was then a restricted free agent. This means during that time, the Thunder could match any offer sheet he inks with another team.

However, Waiters' free agency status changed recently and he is now fully available on the market.

ESPN's Marc Stein said in a tweet that the Nets' desire to land the 24-year-old was unaltered.

The move regarding the qualifying offer made it easier for the Nets to acquire Waiters. All they need to accomplish now is give him a deal, not worrying about Oklahoma City matching it.

As of the moment, the Nets are doing nothing and Waiters is still on the market for any franchise that wants to add him.

However, it can be expected that the Nets are already working on a potential pact to sign Waiters. In their first attempts to land free agent guards, they were shut down since the teams of the ones they signed matched their offer sheets. Now they have a big chance of including a quality backcourt piece to the roster with Waiters becoming an unrestricted free agent.

If the Nets make a move involving Waiters, it would not be their first backcourt improvement this off-season. They already signed a few guards with the notable ones being Jeremy Lin, Randy Foye, and Greivis Vásquez.

The Nets are aiming to build a contending squad after failing to reach the playoffs last season, the first time since the franchise transferred to Brooklyn.
