Belgians showed their solidarity with their police — and their sense of humor — last weekend when they flooded Twitter with cat memes in a bid to help the authorities who were then conducting raids against suspected terrorists.

Brussels, the capital city of Belgium, has been on increased terror alert since terrorists attacked Paris. The city was eventually placed on lockdown on Saturday because of a reported terrorist threat that Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel described as "very serious and imminent."

With ISIS and other terror cells known for utilizing the Internet and social media, the Belgian police countered by tweeting a request to residents not to tweet about police movements to stop important information from being leaked to the suspected terrorists the authorities were chasing.

And in an unprecedented show of support, Belgians responded by tweeting photos and memes of cats with the hashtag #BrusselsLockdown.

Aside from showing that many Belgians are refusing to lose their humorous outlook, the flood of cat pics also quickly buried any reports regarding police movements that might have been previously shared.

The memes also gave Belgians the chance to encourage each other to be brave while also subtly poking fun at the suspected terrorists. Some even made sure to confuse those with terrorist ties by posting misleading information about the police's operations.

The way the Brussel's lockdown was handled quickly garnered support from people all over the world, with some praising Belgians for not giving in to fear. One user showed her defiance of the terrorists and her support for Brussels by tweeting a photo with the caption: "We're stronger than we think!"

The raids conducted by Belgian authorities over the weekend had led to 16 people being detained. However, the police were unable to locate Salah Abdeslam, one of those suspected to have helped in the Paris attacks.

But it was a fruitful counter-terror operation and in the end, the Belgian police thanked citizens with a tweet that clearly showed how much they appreciated the Belgian's effort – a photo of a dish overflowing with cat food.
