'Castle' season 8 episode 3 spoilers: Castle and Beckett work on university murder case, Castle goes undercover as professor

"Castle" came back for an intense season 8 with a two-part premiere. Fans were surely shocked — and a bit let down — at how a seven-season romantic story arc was broken apart in just two episodes. What happens now? Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), of course, won't be giving up on Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) that easily.

Castle-Beckett (or sometimes fondly called "Caskett") shippers have waited seven seasons to see the two hook up and get married. To say that it was a letdown to see Beckett giving it all up to find herself and ease her obsession with her mother's murder is an understatement. But Castle, being who he is, is not yet ready to give up on their relationship.

Spoiler TV has released the official synopsis for "PhDead,"season 8's episode 3. The press release reads:

"When the body of a local college fraternity student is found gruesomely murdered, Castle has to go undercover as a professor in order to gain access to the victim's world. However, he and Beckett soon discover that behind the fun and games of college are some darker secrets the university wants to keep hidden."

Exciting case, indeed, but the murder just might be secondary to what the couple is about to face. The promo for the next episode sees Beckett trying to warn Castle off the case but he is relentless. As he says in the video, "Working cases together is why she fell in love with me," and will therefore be keen on going undercover. Will it work, though? Fans have to wait for episode 3.

The premiere of the new season was described by some as a rewind to the show's "better days." When Castle and Beckett finally got together in season 7, there was a noted dip in ratings versus the couple's "will they, won't they days." How this rewind plays out remains to be seen in the next few weeks.

"Castle" season 8 airs on ABC every Monday, 10 p.m. "PhDead" will be shown on Oct. 5.
