'Chicago PD' season 4 spoilers: Voight decides on Burgess status

(Facebook/NBCChicagoPD)Li Jun Li joins the cast in "Chicago PD" season 4.

Voight (Jason Beghe) has finally decided on who will replace Roman (Brian Geraghty) as Burgess' (Marina Squerciati) new partner in the upcoming season of "Chicago P.D."

Last installment, Roman bid goodbye to the precinct. He and Burgess got involved in a scandal when the bosses questioned their love affair. She was with Roman when he was shot while out on patrol. The higher-ups felt that the incident could have been avoided if they only focused on doing their jobs. Their personal relationship was allegedly interfering with their work and it was giving the department a bad name. Roman was asked to take a desk job or get a new partner. He told Voight "no" to both offers. Instead, he asked Burgess to come with him to San Diego and leave everything behind.

However, Burgess was not ready to give up her life and her friends. She told Roman she was sorry and they parted ways.

Executive producer Matt Olmstead said in an interview last May that they were considering many aspects in choosing Burgess' new partner. He said that they would prefer someone with experience who could be her equal. The pair should reportedly be a power couple, but the EP failed to mention that they were considering a female for the role.

"I think we're looking for someone to come in and partner with Burgess to really re-launch that pairing of two uniforms; a robust pairing as opposed to having to carry somebody or I'm going to look sideways at somebody. We want someone to come in who is already in fifth gear," he said in the interview.

Recently, it has been announced that actress Li Jun Li will play Julie Tay, Burgess new workmate and potential BFF. The "Quantico" alum is set to appear for three episodes. As to whether Li will be a series regular, NBC said it might be considered later on, according to The Hollywood Reporter. No one can explain why Voight chose a female as Burgess' partner. Perhaps he is getting cautious about the male-female pairings at the precinct and its possible effect on their work.

"Chicago P.D." season 4 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
