The Civilization: Beyond Earth release date has been scheduled for Oct. 24 this fall, and the 1999's Alpha Centauri sequel is coming exclusively to PC for now.

"Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earthâ„¢ is a new science-fiction-themed entry into the award-winning Civilization series. Set in the future, global events have destabilized the world leading to a collapse of modern society, a new world order and an uncertain future for humanity. As the human race struggles to recover, the re-developed nations focus their resources on deep space travel to chart a new beginning for mankind," the opening statement on the game's website stated.

Alpha Centauri received a lukewarm response when it was launched commercially in the late 90's. This was a period when online multiplayer games like Counter-Strike and DoTA started to dominate the charts.

One of the reasons why the game was received negatively was due to the lack of depth in the gameplay. The developers took this into consideration when they started working on the gameplay in Civilization: Beyond Earth.

"Basically, one of the fundamental ideas of Beyond Earth is post-humanism, this idea of where does human civilisation go from here. If you took a human being a thousand years ago and looked at a human being today, morphologically they'd be very similar. You probably couldn't tell the difference if they were dressed the same. But we imply in this game that we're accelerating our own development, both in terms of our society and our ecology and our adaptations to this new world," Producer Will Miller said in an interview with Metro.

Civilization: Beyond Earth is developed by Firaxis Games and will be published by 2K.

In order to win, players must survive attacks of giant worms, monstrous insects and Australian villains.

There is no word yet if the game is coming to consoles.

The official trailer was first previewed last August and offers an in-depth look at the Civilization: Beyond Earth gameplay. Take a look for yourself below.
