Conor McGregor latest news: UFC champion gets a $25 million offer to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing ring

(Reuters/ Mark J. Rebilas)UFC champion Conor McGregor offered to go up against boxing champ Floyd Mayweather

UFC Chief Dana Wight offered 28-year-old Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor and 39-year-old retired boxer Floyd Mayweather $25 million (£41 million) each for a face-off in the ring. On top of the $25 million for each contender, White also announced that the two will get cuts from the pay-per-view proceeds.

"I'll tell you what Floyd, here's a real offer," White said in a statement on the "The Herd" radio talk show. "I'm the only guy that can actually make the offer and I'm actually making a real offer: We'll pay you $25 million, we'll pay Conor $25 million and then we'll talk about pay-per-view at a certain number. There's a real offer."

White's offer came at the heels of Mayweather's confirmation that he is willing to give McGregor $15 million to get in the boxing ring with him. White's offer is expected to be unattractive to Mayweather as he was previously offered a guaranteed $100 million purse to fight Manny Pacquiao in 2015. Mayweather's fight versus Pacquaio in 2015 was considered to be the most lucrative in all of boxing history. It is believed that Mayweather took home nearly a quarter of a billion dollars after his fight with Pacquiao. Mayweather's last fight in 2015 against Andre Berto had a guaranteed purse of $32 million.

McGregor, on the other hand, took home $3 million in his last fight in August against Nate Diaz. Diaz reportedly took home $2 million, making the bout the first ever in UFC history where both contenders get to keep a seven-figure amount.

While a fight between a UFC athlete and a professional boxer is a mismatch in so many ways, some fans are skeptical about it ever pushing through. Naturally, McGregor would lose to Mayweather inside the boxing ring in the same way that the latter will lose against him inside a UFC ring. But for the right price, reports are hinting that Mayweather is open to the idea.
