Daylight Saving Time news: Americans to gain one extra hour on November 6; British on October 30

(REUTERS/Brian Snyder)Americans will experience two 2 a.m.s this coming November 6 as DST ends.

Americans will gain one extra hour beginning November 6 at 2 in the morning as the time will be re-set to 1 in the morning once more with the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST).

It was in March 23 this year when the Americans lost an hour after the clock was advanced to 3 a.m. on the said day, which means the American populace did not experience a 2 a.m. time on the said date. However, with the end of the DST this year, Americans will experience the opposite.

The end of the DST signals the arrival of the winter season.

Most of the states and territories of U.S.A. take part in the DST, which is the process of setting the clock an hour earlier during the spring and restoring it to its original setting during the fall. The practice aims at maximizing the use of daylight so that less electricity can be consumed.

While it's true that DST is aimed at lessening energy consumption, not everybody approves of the idea. In fact, certain states and territories, such as Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands, don't observe DST. While Utah still observes DST, it is said to be eventually ending its participation in the program.

Although DST comes with a good purpose, not everybody hails the practice as some people claim that it is not really certain how much amount of energy is actually saved during the entire period of practicing it. There are also those who believe that, because of DST, children need to walk to school early in the morning while it may still be dark, which can put their lives into jeopardy.

Additionally, DST is also associated with heart attacks as it is said that more people become prone to such attacks during DST due to lack of sleep, while the rate of heart attack cases drops by 21 percent after DST has ended.

Meanwhile, the end of DST is happening some days earlier for UK as the British will experience an additional hour beginning Sunday, October 30 at 2 in the morning. While the end of DST in the U.S.A. signals the end of autumn, the end of DST marks the conclusion of British summer.
