Fans of the Marvel comic book superhero Doctor Strange are gearing up for the release date of a movie adaptation in 2016. Actor Joaquin Phoenix reportedly passed on playing the Sorcerer Supreme after a month of serious casting talks on landing the role.

Now that the spot is empty again, several actors are rumored to be considered for the exciting lead part.

According to several reports, 'The Notebook' actor Ryan Gosling has met with Marvel regarding the 'Doctor Strange' film. The actor also allegedly met with Summit Films for their 'Houdini' flick.

Another actor who's rumored to be playing the powerful neurosurgeon is 'Sherlock' actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Since the actor has a busy schedule, however, it is uncertain if he will indeed land the role.

A new name that has been added to the roster of contenders is Irish actor, Colin Farrell. Farrell is currently working on the second season of HBO's 'True Detective,' and a superhero role might be a good addition to his already impressive resume.

Tom Hardy is also rumored to be a nominee for the role, as well as 'The Matrix' lead, Keannu Reeves. The casting shortlist also includes Hollywood heavy-hitters such as Justin Theroux, Ewan McGregor, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ethan Hawke.
