Creator Steven Moffat recently addressed rumors regarding a potential 'Doctor Who' film and explained that there are no current plans for a big screen adaptation. While the series' online community appears keen on such a project, Moffat cautioned that it would be difficult to differentiate between a television series and a film adaptation as there has only ever been one Doctor at a time and the production team would be hard pressed to find a sensible shooting schedule that can accommodate two big projects running almost concurrently.

Moffat added that movies typically require bigger budgets which makes the entire proposition even more difficult as funding for the television series is already complicated. "We're talking one of the biggest TV shows in the world. It can't just be a medium-size movie—it's gotta be a colossal movie. I've sat with people, saying—and in the end it's not my decision or my choice, I don't own Doctor Who—'Okay, explain to me how it's going to work.' And nobody has an answer," he said, as per an article at Entertainment Weekly.

Whatever the case, Moffat and his team are hard at work on the upcoming ninth series of 'Doctor Who'. The new series looks to benefit from lead star Peter Capaldi's growing experience with the role as the production team looks to utilize his skills in a more robust way. According to Moffat, "I told the [show's] writers, don't just write him mean, write him funny - because he'll make any joke fly. As ever, Doctor Who is a combination of complete daft silliness and loads of people getting slaughtered in the early evening. Tonally, [next season is] very much the same. Peter is getting stronger and more confident in the role."

Filming for the ninth series is ongoing and the premiere is expected sometime in Fall 2015.
