'Doctor Who' and 'Sherlock' rumor: Fans still insist on a crossover; says Sherlock can always do a sci-fi Christmas special

"Doctor Who" and "Sherlock" are probably two of the most popular television franchises to come out of the UK. It is therefore a given that fans of both series clamour for a crossover. Even with executive producer Steven Moffat saying such venture is an impossibility, some still try to make a case for it.

The idea of a crossover between "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock" had been in the air since July (and maybe even earlier, if one really digs deep into fan fan forums). Back then, executive producer for both shows Steven Moffat says he will open to the idea. Recently, though, such other arguments against the two spilling over had arisen, from Moffat himself.

In September, Moffat spoke with Collider and told the online publication that bringing the Doctor and Sherlock Holmes together will greatly alter the life of Sherlock especially; the latter, as fans are aware of, does not exist in a supernatural universe.

In the end, he simply said, "It's not going to happen. That's just the truth of it."

But CarterMatt, in his monthly Crossover feature, insisted that a crossover is still not far-off. He pointed out that if "Sherlock" can pull-off a one-time Victorian special, why not a sci-fi special with the Doctor? The site even forwards some ideas how the crossover might happen.

The Doctor might show up one day in 221B Baker Street and ask the Sherlock-Watson tandem to help with a mission. Later, he might have a device that can help wipe out their memories. Or, simply have a mission that does not involve too much aliens and space travel. Either way, it would work and will surely be a hit to fans, who have already dedicated a lot of time creating crossover fan fiction.

But while fans are still waiting on the Doctor and Sherlock crossing paths, they can catch Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor as he goes on his adventures of season nine every Saturday on BBC. Sherlock, on the other hand, will be back with a "Christmas" special on Jan. 1, 2016.
