'Elementary' season 5 spoilers update: Betty Gilpin returns as Sherlock's love interest Fiona

(Elementary / Facebook)"Elementary" season 5 premieres on Oct. 2, Sunday, at 10 p.m on CBS.

In less than two weeks, CBS' modern take of Sherlock Holmes series, "Elementary," returns for a fifth season. While waiting for the premiere, here is a roundup of details about the upcoming installment.

Actress Betty Gilpin returns for the fifth season to play Fiona. After her strong debut in the previous season by being the strong love interest of Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller), Fiona's relationship with the sleuth will be explored more. Before getting involved with Sherlock, Fiona is known as a brilliant and socially awkward software engineer. After they met in a murder investigation, things between them have become more romantic.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Rob Doherty revealed that Gilpin's character will reappear sometimes after the first few episodes.

"We certainly owe a status report for the Sherlock/Fiona relationship," Doherty said. "In the first few episodes there won't be much mention of her, but we are working on a return for Betty Gilpin. Fiona is a thread that we won't let dangle too long, especially considering how much we love Betty."

In a separate interview with TVLine, Doherty revealed that the fifth season will start off where the previous season left off. Sherlock and Joan (Lucy Liu) are in the middle of investigating a case on a mad bomber. While they look for information, they will encounter one of Joan's former patients, Shinwell Johnson (Nelsan Ellis), who is an ex-convict.

The difference between the upcoming season and the previous installments, the executive producer revealed, is that the life of a criminal like Shinwell will be explored and may even be reformed. He said that Sherlock and Jane will form a relationship with Shinwell with the intention of helping him. However, it will not be smooth sailing because it is something they haven't experienced yet.
