'Fast & Furious 8' news: director named as F. Gary Gray; Vin Diesel says eighth movie is from Paul Walker

"Fast & Furious 8" is all set to ride out as it has finally found a director.

It took a while but after some hemming and hawing, "Straight Outta Compton's" F. Gary Gray has been chosen to helm the eighth installment in the very lucrative franchise.

There had been a lot of speculation on who would sit in the director's chair for "F8," or as star Vin Diesel calls it, "Fate." Numerous directors were considered but most had to beg off due to scheduling conflicts. There were also reports that Diesel himself was making the process difficult. But now the days of speculating are over.

Diesel's Facebook post on Wednesday all but formally announced who will be at the helm of the next "Fast & Furious" movie. It wasn't captioned but Diesel and Gray sitting with a collage of images from the car-loving franchise is a big clue as to what the photo is about.

Gray, who's also known for directing music videos for Cypress Hill and Dr. Dre, straight up confirmed the news on Thursday via his Facebook page and on Twitter. In his post, the 46-year-old director expressed his excitement about bringing "the next chapter in the 'Fast & Furious' saga" and thanked Diesel, producer Neal H. Moritz and Universal Studios for making him a partner in the journey.

"FF8" will be the first "Furious" flick that will not feature Paul Walker. The star, who died when "Furious 7" was in the midst of production, had some of scenes finished via CGI and by using his brothers as stand-ins.  "Furious 7" went on to smash box office records by raking in $1.5 billion worldwide.

Despite the tragedy that had befallen the cast and crew, star Michelle Rodriguez said the next movie is inspired by Paul. The 37-year-old actress told E!Online that they need "a good reason to move on after Paul" and it is to film another "Fast & Furious" trilogy that has heart and a passionate director.

Diesel, who calls Walker his "brother," admitted the same thing during the MTV Movie Awards and said that while "Furious 7" was for Paul, "8" is from Paul.

"FF8" will usher in the last trilogy in the franchise and will reach theaters on April 14, 2017.
