Macbook Air 2014 or Surface Pro 3 for the holidays?

In time for the holiday season, electronics companies are launching all sorts of discounts to lure in buyers. But before you decide which one to get, let's look back at the two most hyped gadgets of the year: Apple's Macbook Air 2014 and Microsoft's Surface Pro 3.

They're both gorgeous to look at, but which one will really get your money back with their usefulness? You decide.

Macbook Air 2014 is a sleek laptop, a laptop that's not really too much of an upgrade from the previous one. It's equipped with OS X Yosemite, Apple's latest and most refined operating system, perhaps the smoothest OS there is today. When you compare this to Surface Pro 3, which is a tablet and can be converted to a laptop with a detachable keyboard (if you don't mind doling out an extra $130), Surface Pro tumbles. Its operating system, Windows 8.1, has been garnering mostly negative feedback because of its slow updates and user interface, not to mention the apps that still needs sharpening around the edges.

Surface Pro 3's 12-inch screen goes very well with its astonishing 2160x1440 screen resolution, whereas Macbook Air only has 1366x768.  This resolution for Mac goes for both its 11-inch and 13-inch versions. The Macbook doesn't have a touch screen option, while Surface, being a tablet, has more touching tweaks. Surface Pro 3 comes with a stylus pen situated at the left side of its attached keyboard. They both come with core i5 and i7 processors.

Countless reviews have mentioned the inconvenience that comes with Surface's kickstands. It allows a wider angle than the Surface Pro 2, but it's nevertheless unstable when it's on your lap, which is ironic because the product is marketed as "the tablet that can replace your laptop." But when you use it as just a tablet, it's very light, weighing only 1.12lbs, and 2.41lbs with the keyboard, whereas Macbook weighs 2.38 lbs. Well, there's your weight watch.

One HD camera or two decent cameras? Macbook Air boasts of a front 720p HD camera, while Surface has 5MP rear and front cameras. These two almost have the same battery life. It's a tough decision, but you'll get through it.

Now that you know what these two have, say hello to the mind-boggling price. The 11-inch Macbook Air with 128GB storage costs $899, while the 256GB storage costs $1099. If you opt for a bigger screen, the 13-inch Macbook with 128GB will take $999 out of your pocket, while the one with 256GB will take $1199.

But thanks to the holidays, Apple slashed $100 for both 128GB and 256GB of its 11-inch, and $200 for its 13-inch with 256GB storage.

Apple is not the only one cutting prices, Microsoft is, too. Originally priced at $999 for its 128GB storage, it now costs $799 plus $100 store credit, which you can use to buy the $130 detachable keyboard.
