Galaxy S8 rumors: Upcoming Samsung device to ditch the curved-edge variant?

(Samsung)Shown in the photo are the Galaxy S7 Edge and the Galaxy S7. Rumors claim that the Galaxy S8 will no longer offer an Edge variant.

After it was speculated that the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S8 will only have an edge-to-edge screen display variant, the latest reports suggest that it may not be the case as the device will only be available in a flat AMOLED screen display variant.

According to the latest reports, it is likely for the Galaxy S8 to offer something new and will not have an Edge variant, something that has made Samsung even more distinct from its competitors since the S6 and current S7. This speculation stemmed from the recently released video from Samsung, showing that the upcoming Galaxy S8 will, indeed, come in an AMOLED display. However, as the said video in Korean only shows a flat screen Galaxy S8, it is now assumed that the device will not offer a curved-edge variant.

Basing on the said video, some can't help but suspect that, instead of the Edge, the Galaxy S8 may offer another variant: The Galaxy S8 Plus, a bigger version of the device, which Apple earlier introduced beginning its iPhone 6. Instead of another Edge variant, the device seems to be a stretched-out version of the curved-edge offering of the Samsung Galaxy S series as it has very thin bezels.

However, other sources claim that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will maintain its Edge variant as the supposed renders of the device have leaked online recently. While there is no way to confirm at this point in time that the said renders are, indeed, valid or not, it is said that they seem to corroborate earlier rumors about the device.

It is also alleged that the video seems to suggest that earlier rumors claiming that the Galaxy S8 will be devoid of a home button are correct. This leads others into suspecting that earlier speculations on the Galaxy S8 having a display-embedded fingerprint sensor may be more than just a rumor after all.

Other rumors point to the Galaxy S8 having the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 as its processor and will maintain the headphone jack, contradicting earlier reports that it will follow the move of Apple's iPhone ditching the said feature.

While it is said that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S8 in the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) next month, some rumors claim that it will do so in April at an event in New York.

Whatever the truth on when the Galaxy S8 will arrive, one thing is for sure: All the speculations and rumors attached to the device can only be confirmed once it has arrived.
