'Game of Thrones' season 8 renewal news, updates: Final season may consist of more than six episodes

(Facebook/GameofThrones)"Game of Thrones" has not yet been renewed for a season 8 because David Benioff and Dan Weiss are still considering the final episode count.

It looks like there might be more than just six episodes in the eighth and final season of "Game of Thrones." The final episode count has not been finalized, which is why HBO has yet to renew the series officially for season 8.

This much was revealed when HBO programming president Casey Bloys spoke to TVLine about the final season of "Game of Thrones."

"The only thing we're working out is how many episodes they want to do," Bloys revealed, adding that, like everyone else, he is hoping for more than just six installments.

"They're still figuring it out because I think they're trying to get a shape of the season. They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show. It's all about how many they're comfortable [with]. But I'll always take more," Bloys pointed out.

It came as quite the head-scratcher when HBO renewed "Game of Thrones" for a seventh season, but left out the eighth, even though showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have already stated in the past that the series only has two seasons left. And with Bloys' recent admission, it has all become crystal clear.

"If you're afraid we're not going to do an eighth season, I assure you we're going to," Bloys reaffirmed, indicating that HBO is just waiting for the showrunners' final count.

Last year, Bloys revealed that Weiss and Benioff's mutual decision to end the show at eight was made so as to not sacrifice the quality of the content. So many television shows peak early yet continue to churn out content season after season without considering the dwindling quality. And "Game of Thrones" just isn't one of those shows.

The HBO fantasy series is currently filming its seventh season, which will only consist of seven episodes. It is expected to premiere in the summer.
