The four-year wait for "The Winds of Winter" to come out has been excruciating for hardcore "Game of Thrones" fans. But if George R.R. Martin is to be believed, fans would not have to wait for long as the book is expected to come out in 2016. And as a reward, the fantasy writer has included a twist that is so insane it will drive readers mad.

Several publications have reported that Martin had confirmed that the next installation of "A Song of Ice and Fire" would hit store shelves before "Game of Thrones" returns for its sixth season. And with the HBO hit rumored to be back on air by late March or the middle of April, it follows that "The Winds of Winter" should be available by the first quarter of 2016.

The 66-year-old novelist has been hammering away on the novel the past few months, trying to get it ready before the next season of "Game of Thrones." The popular show, which is based on Martin's novels, has already mined almost all the plotlines of the five books and has even resorted to deviating from some of the events in the books.

As a result, Martin is said to be doing everything he can to ensure that he gets "Winds of Winter" out as soon as possible. The author has previously mentioned that he cannot write unless he is at home and at his desk and the hectic schedule he had writing for the show, attending book signings and the like have all contributed to getting "The Winds of Winter" pushed to the back burner. But it seems Martin is trying to make up for lost time.

"I wish it was out now," confesses the writer. "But I canceled two convention appearances, I'm turning down a lot more interviews - anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done."

The way Martin has been going, it seems that he already has covered a lot of ground, even promising his readers that he has thought of a crazy twist to the saga. The known Marvel fanboy even confessed that the twist will "drive your readers crazy but I love it.

However, he is still deciding whether or not to continue with what he had planned. All he knows is that "it's a great twist" and is "something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen."
