Golden State Warriors trade rumors 2016: Klay Thompson the best trade option?

As of now, the Golden State Warriors engaging in a trade involving one of their star players is highly unlikely. But recently, it looks like All-Star guard Klay Thompson will be the man dealt if ever they accomplish an exchange.

(Reuters/Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports)Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson (11) is pressured by Miami Heat forward Justise Winslow (20) during the second half at American Airlines Arena.

It is unknown why Thompson was dragged to the rumor mill all of a sudden, but the most significant speculation he is a part of is a possible move to the Denver Nuggets.

When it comes to the Nuggets, there are a number of players frequently mentioned in a potential swap with the Dubs for Thompson. Some of them are Danilo Gallinari, Kenneth Faried, and Gary Harris.

All the names mentioned are quality players, despite this idea that Golden State dealing away Thompson is far-fetched.

Last season, Thompson had his best season yet, averaging 22.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, with 2.1 assists per contest. He was the second-leading scorer for Golden State, just behind Stephen Curry's 30.1 points per night.

Thompson remained consistent during the Warriors' playoff run in which he was averaging 24.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per outing. The 26-year-old was still second in scoring for the squad but he closed the gap as Curry's average dropped to 25.1 points.

Now that the Warriors have Durant, they are not expected to part ways with any of the remaining championship pieces they have and Thompson is one of those.

But if the 2016-17 National Basketball Association (NBA) seasons turns out to be a bust for the Dubs, then there could be a chance that Thompson will be viewed as a trade piece.

Trading may not be an issue the Warriors will prioritize ahead of their new campaign. They might want to add depth first, something a lot of people are seeing as a problem for them even if they have the likes of Thompson, Curry, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green.
