Android Lion and iOS 8 are both promised to be released this coming fall, but the opposing tech giants behind respective mobile OS, Google and Apple, have yet to reveal the exact dates.

Apple, Inc. unveiled iOS 8 on June 2 at the WWDC 2014 and Google followed three weeks later during the Google I/O Developer Conference on June 25.

Both pledged to be the "best version ever" to power the next generation flagship smartphones from the two powerhouses based in the US.

Apple has formed a cult-like following, while Android also has a fandom of its own.

But, which one is really better?

Apple iOS 8 focuses on reinvention and innovation of apps that are used on a daily basis such as Messages and Photos.

Users can now make and receive calls using their Macs or iPad if the iPhone is charging in another room or is physically out of reach, e.g. in a backpack.

The latest operating system from the Tim Cook-lead Apple team will also cement its status in the health and wellness mobility business through the HealthKit app.

A program developed in partnership with Mayo Clinic, the Healthkit app aims to collect, present and make good use of a person's health and fitness information via an easy-to-read dashboard.

On the other hand, there is little known about Android Lion aside from the previews during the Google I/O event.

It seems like the new OS from Google will concentrate on improving design and interface, and enhance the user experience.

Android Lion unwrapped a new design language called Material, a cleaner and crisper style that developers can build on when creating apps.

The new lockscreen will show notifications, and a card style layout will be the new look for multitasking.

Android and iOS have dominated the charts for a long time, but Microsoft is not ready to throw in the towel just yet, having recently presented its updated Windows Phone 8.1.
