Months before the premiere of "Grey's Anatomy" season thirteen, fans are already eager to know what's next for Meredith and Nathan, knowing that there will always be some sort of conflict to come in between the two.

While struggles are always rampant on the show, Martin Henderson recently talked about what fans can expect of his character, Nathan, and Mer (Ellen Pompeo) once the series returns this fall.

In a recent interview with TV Line, Henderson said, "I that's always really powerful between a couple," referring to the idea that Nathan can be the person to lighten up Mer's life since they both share a loss somehow.

Henderson further teased on their potential romance as he said, the one thing they have in common "may be fertile ground for them to actually have a relationship with some meaning."

In the finale of "Grey's Anatomy" season twelve, fans saw how Maggie (Kelly McCreary) told Meredith that she likes Nathan. Unfortunately, Maggie isn't aware yet that Mer and Nathan already slept together and instead of her, Nathan was actually giving Meredith a romantic stare during Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen's (Kevin McKidd) wedding.

As fans already know, Nathan has the capability to make Mer laugh - something no one has really done ever since Derek (Patrick Dempsey) passed away. Could this be the connection that will drive the two closer? For Henderson, "It'll be interesting to see whose heart melts first."

On the other hand, Henderson noted that viewers may also see a different bond between the two aside from romance. Their relationship could be all about friendship and fun as Henderson believes Nathan could only serve as someone to bring friendship and joy into Mer's sad life. "It might be nice for her to have the opportunity to actually lighten up a bit around some stuff," he said.

According to The International Business Times, Pompeo has also talked about the matter previously. She said the show may still be testing the waters regarding Meredith's second shot at love. This could mean that a romantic storyline for Mer and Nathan may or may not push through since this will be up to the reaction of fans, whether they would accept an arc that could possibly erase Meredith's memories with Derek now that a new man has arrived.

"Grey's Anatomy" is scheduled to premiere sometime this fall on ABC.
