Haiti Quake Recovery Stories, Anti-Malaria Documentary Win Religious Communications Awards

(Paul Jeffrey/ACT Alliance)In addition to providing emergency aid, Church World Service, a member of the ACT Alliance, will be helping Haiti earthquake survivors recover their homes, lives and livelihoods, with a special focus on food security and on the needs of women and children.

A pair of stories on the recovery effort from Haiti's 2010 earthquake, and a church campaign to combat malaria won DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards for Best of Class distinction on Thursday for excellence in religious communications and public relations.

The Religion Communicators Council, an interfaith association of religion communicators, handed out the awards on Thursday at the start of its National Convention in Philadelphia.

Other Best of Class winners included publications on church mission and development, an annual report, and an anti-hunger pamphlet and blog.

The Writing for Publication award went to Chris Herlinger of Church World Service for "Haiti: A Year Later." He also received a Specialized Writing award for "Rubble Nation: Haiti's Pain, Haiti's Promise."

The Award for Public Relations/Advertising Campaign went to Jean Robinson of the United Church of Christ for "Mission: 1" an anti-malaria campaign which took place last year.

There were 10 Best of Class Awards handed out from 232 entries accepted as well as 111 winners in other categories. Colleagues at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. Judged.
