The highly anticipated movie "How to Train Your Dragon 3" isn't expected to be released until 2018.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in 2016, however, behind-the-scenes trouble for DreamWorks Animation, which included company restructuring and massive lay-offs, led to its eventual delay.

The third film in the critically acclaimed "How to Train Your Dragon" series has been confirmed to be the final installment. It will provide the conclusion to Hiccup's coming of age story.

"How to Train Your Dragon" writer and director, Dean DeBlois, revealed the plot earlier this year. "Hiccup and Toothless are now chiefs of their respective tribes, and it's a dueling story where you have both characters trying to do what's right for their kind, and an eventual outcome where Hiccup is able to stand on his own," DeBlois said.

The movie will also tackle the story of where Cressida Cowell's "How to Train Your Dragon" novel series began. "There were dragons when I was a boy... You'll have to take my word for it," Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III says in the first line in Cowell's novel. The story has Hiccup reflecting back to the time that there were dragons.

DeBlois revealed that he was also interested in exploring the mythology of dragons. The upcoming movie also aims to provide insight into the world of dragons, including their intelligence and other characteristics that have been initially explored in the first two movies. The story may tackle what happened to the dragons, where they went and whether they will come back.

The sequel introduced villain, Drago, who was voiced by Djimon Hounsou. Drago is expected to have an even bigger role in the upcoming film. DeBlois commented that the will be fleshed out more to reveal complexities in his character.

While DeBlois is firm in his decision to conclude the story of Hiccup in three chapters, he was open to the possibility of developing spin-offs in the future.

Jay Baruchel, who voices Hiccup, will also be joined by returning voice actors Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christoper Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Cate Blanchett and Kristen Wiig.

"How to Train Your Dragon 3" will be released to theaters on June 29, 2018.
