Chip maker Qualcomm has been at the receiving end of criticism for overheating problems with its Snapdragon 810 processor in comparison to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 801 chipset. Just last month, Korean consumer electronics giant, LG, which is also using the Snapdragon 810 chipset in its upcoming G Flex 2, released the results of a test that showed the Snapdragon 801 running at higher temperatures, forcing it to use the newer and cooler chipset in its smartphone. Samsung also decided to switch from using the Snapdragon 810 in its just released Galaxy S6 flagship to its homegrown Exynos chipset after discovering that Qualcomm's chip was overheating.

In the latest benchmark test conducted by a Dutch website on some of the flagship smartphones currently available in the market, the just released HTC One M9 has exposed the overheating issue of Qualcomm's latest chipset. The Dutch website carried out a test on five flagship smartphones, including the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the HTC One M8, the LG G3, and the upcoming HTC One M9 using the "GFXBench" app as benchmark. The test revealed that after a period of continued use with the benchmark app, the HTC One M9 showed the highest temperature reading of 55 degrees Celsius via infrared, making the phone too hot to hold on to. Among the other smartphones that were put to test, LG G3 recorded the second highest temperature reading of 42.2 degrees Celsius, followed by the Apple iPhone 6 Plus with a reading of 39.4 degrees Celsius. HTC One M8 recorded a temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was the coolest at 37.8 degrees Celsius.

However, HTC has just released the One M9 with the Snapdragon 810 processor in Taiwan after updating its software, which appears to have resolved the overheating issues. An updated thermal image of the HTC One M9 being benchmarked has shown the device efficiently dissipating the heat being produced internally, which is now spreading equally across the phone's surface without remaining concentrated at a single spot. HTC is expected to release the One M9 across Europe over the next couple of days and has confirmed that the device will be available for purchase in the U.S. on April 10.
