iOS 8 beta download: Split-screen multitasking feature but no iPhone 4 support

(Photo: APPADVICE)The first look of split-screen multitasking feature uncovered in iOS 8 beta version.

Before iOS 8's public release this fall, Apple announced the new beta version of the mobile software during the WWDC 2014 for developers.

The iOS 8 beta download brings forth several fresh features to iDevices including quick reply texting, privacy upgrades to safeguard users from marketers and split-screen multitasking capabilities.

The newly discovered split-screen code in iOS 8 beta strongly indicates that Apple is preparing to add this feature that allows two apps running side-by-side in multiple sizes.

It was developer Steven Troughton-Smith who uncovered this code and posted his finding on Twitter.

The tweet reads:

So... just in case there was any doubt left... iOS 8's SpringBoard has code to run two apps side-by-side. 1/4 size, 1/2 size, or 3/4 size.

Although the split-screen item looks rough thus far, Apple is clear with the intention of catching up (or perhaps surpassing) Microsoft's Surface tablets that carry the multi-display functionality at once.

Troughton-Smith also hinted on the pane sizes that he identified – approximately 341pt, 512pt, 682pt and1024pt for full screen.

Ahead of the public launch, Apple gets app developers to try out the beta platforms for a period of time.

These test versions provide them with repertoire of opportunities to make their apps run with the new OS.

The new breed of OS however will not support iPhone 4 and older models.

The ones supported by iOS 8 beta are the following: iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPod touch 5th gen, iPad 2, iPad with retina display, iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPad Mini with retina display.

If you have any of the above-mentioned device or has a developer's account, you can grab the iOS 8 beta version by accessing this link.

There is no specific public release date of iOS 8 yet, but the killer specs of the system are amassing more excitement from developers, consumers and industry pundits.
