iPhone 8 release date, specs rumors: IP68 rating expected on Apple's 10th anniversary smartphone

(Apple)The iPhone 8 will reportedly have an IP68 rating.

Apple is undoubtedly working hard on its upcoming iPhone 8, especially since it is expected to be the 10th anniversary smartphone. Apart from some radical changes design-wise, Apple's next flagship offering is said to have an IP68 certification.

It is widely known by now that Apple's latest iPhone 7 only has an IP67 rating — something that has been criticized by many tech enthusiasts, mainly because of the Cupertino-based company's unpopular decision to remove the headphone jack. For those who are unaware, an IP67 rating allows the smartphone to be dunked in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

But according to Forbes, Apple's reasoning for axing the headphone jack was because it was apparently "essential" to give the iPhone 7 an IP67 certification. The company also explained that the headphone jack's exclusion allowed for a bigger battery. However, many were surprised when the iPhone 7 did not have a significantly bigger battery than the iPhone 6, which still had a headphone jack. Moreover, Apple's biggest rival in the smartphone industry, Samsung, released the Galaxy S7 with an IP68 rating, even though a headphone jack was still on board the device.

With an IP68 certification expected on the iPhone 8, Apple has now matched Samsung in terms of water and dust resistance. However, it should be noted that a certification rating for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 is still unknown.

In celebration of the iPhone's 10th anniversary, Apple is going to release the iPhone 8 alongside the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. Despite their simultaneous launch, though, the iPhone 8 will remain the top dog among the three offerings and is expected to bring in record-breaking sales revenues for the company. It is even expected to have an all-glass chassis, fast charging, wireless charging, and a Tap to Wake function that only existed on Android smartphones in the past.

Since nothing can be confirmed yet, though, readers are advised to take this news with a grain of salt for now.
