iPhone 8 release date, specs rumors: iPhone OLED display could be similar to competitors' smartphones

Apple is expected to introduce a revolutionary installment for its iPhone series in time for the 10th anniversary of its flagship smartphone line.

Apple has yet to announce its plans for the iPhone 8, but the latest rumors are suggesting big changes. If the reports are true, the iPhone model might feature a new design, as well as new features. But perhaps the biggest change that is expected to be introduced this year is the curved display with OLED technology, similar to that of Samsung's smartphone flagship series. If Apple pushes through with the rumored tech, then it will be the first iPhone unit to have such a feature.

To note, Apple has already secured a patent for curved screen displays.

Moving away from the LCD display, the alleged OLED display will bring more vivid colors and tones and better contrasts and blacks to the iPhone series. In addition, the OLED display offers reduced power usage.

So far, the highest iPhone pixels per inch (PPI), which is at 401 PPI, is featured in the latest Plus unit. Most likely the company will not decrease the PPI. Hence, if the iPhone 8 will be as big as its preceding unit, its curved display will have to be larger and with a higher resolution.

According to sources, Apple is expected to get the OLED tech from one of its existing suppliers, which could mean that the iPhone 8 would look rather similar to one of its competitors.

Samsung has long since introduced the curved screen display and is still expected to use the feature in its upcoming Galaxy S8. Also, Google's next Pixel installment will reportedly introduce the same feature. And reports speculate that the competitors might launch their flagship units ahead of Apple.

Again, the tech giant has yet to respond to the latest speculations, so tech junkies should treat the reports with a grain of salt.
