'Jessica Jones' season 2 news, release date: All episodes to be directed by women

(Facebook/MarvelsJessicaJones)"Jessica Jones" season 2 will have all-female directors.

"Jessica Jones" is scheduled to start shooting in 2017. And when it begins, the second season will have an all-female roster of directors.

The upcoming season will consist of 13 episodes and it looks like all of them will be helmed by female directors. This much was revealed by executive producer and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg when she appeared at the Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment panel.

Rosenberg explained that they made the decision after they agreed that the second season needed a larger number of female directors. This quickly escalated to deciding on hiring an all-female roster.

According to Variety, the scripts for "Marvel's Jessica Jones" season 2 are almost finished. Additionally, Rosenberg explained where inspiration for the stories comes from.

"When I interview a writer, I'm less interested in what you've been doing professionally than I am in where you're from, what your parents do, what's your life experience, what are you bringing to the table personally?" she revealed. "I don't want a bunch of people who look and sound [like me] and have the experiences I have."

As previously reported, the sophomore season of the Marvel superhero series will be quite different from the first. There will also be a lot of character development and new stories. Apart from that, Rosenberg has stayed relatively mum on details about the plot of the upcoming season.

Since Marvel and Netflix both have a lot on their plate, though, fans won't witness the second season of "Jessica Jones" until after other shows have premiered. "Marvel's Luke Cage" was only recently released on Netflix, and there are still two other shows waiting in line. "Iron Fist" is scheduled to arrive on March 17, while "The Defenders" is slated to premiere sometime in 2017. This means that "Jessica Jones" season 2 may be looking at a 2018 release.

And while the wait may be long, fans will still get to see Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones on "The Defenders," which will see her team up with other superheroes in "Avengers" fashion.
