Justin Bieber is no stranger to headlines after spending most of his teenage years featuring in them. Bieber's antics and behavior have been highly publicized over the years and he has always been harshly criticized for his mess-ups.

The singer, now 21, has spent the past year revamping his image. Bieber even took part in a "Comedy Central Roast" to show that he acknowledges his mistakes and can laugh about them now.

Bieber, for his part, has tried to maintain a lower profile and has been focusing instead on his music.

Bieber was one of the performers during the 2015 MTV VMAs held last Aug. 30. He performed "Where Are U Now" and his latest single, "What Do You Mean?" After ending his performance to great applause, the singer couldn't help but become emotional, even shedding tears.

To shed light on his emotional performance, the singer made an appearance on "The Tonight Show" last Sept. 2. Bieber explained to host, Jimmy Fallon, "It was just so overwhelming for me... everything, the performance."

He was feeling disappointed after missing some cues in his performance so he didn't expect the positive response. He also shared that it has been hard being judged by other people, especially after having worked so hard on his new album.

"It was authentic and real. I was just wanting it so bad," Bieber said. The singer also recalled that the last time he was on stage, he was booed by the crowd.

Bieber also tried to explain his past behaviors, blaming it on the influence of "knuckleheads." Bieber claimed that he was just testing the waters and trying to make decisions on his own, just like any other teenager, except he had the added pressure of being in the spotlight.

Time will tell whether or not his change for the better is authentic and enduring, however, it cannot be denied that despite everything he has been through, Bieber's music is a force to be reckoned with.

Since releasing his "What Do You Mean?" single from his upcoming album, Bieber has broken a few records.

His single reached the iTunes #1 spot, just five minutes after its release.

The singer also dethroned One Direction, with his single now being the most streamed track on Spotify. He gained 21 million streams in just five days.

"What Do You Mean?" is Bieber's fourth studio album and will be released on Nov. 13.
