While the third installment of "Kingdom Hearts" is confirmed to be under development, most of the details about the game are still being kept under wraps. If the speculations surfacing online are to be believed, then the game could turn out to be the most interesting one in the series so far.

"Kingdom Hearts", which is developed and distributed by Square Enix, is a crossover role-playing action game first released in 2002. The game features the protagonist – a boy named Sora - interacting with both Square Enix and Disney characters, with the aim of protecting them from evil enemies, which are mostly the same ones featured in the film that they have been lifted from.

Since its first release almost 13 years ago, the game has spawned eight other versions, all of which have been commercial and critical successes. Many videogame aggregators have praised the game, saying that while the premise of "Kingdom Hearts" seems too farfetched to work, the combination of serious "Final Fantasy" characters and light-hearted Disney cartoons is impressive.

The third installment of the game had been given the green light in June 2013, and is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated game releases.

But what has piqued the interest of fans the most is the news of Disney recently acquiring several other franchises.

Fans theorize that this business move could mean that the "Kingdom Hearts" universe will expand further. With Disney holding the rights to Lucasfilm productions and Marvel Entertainment, it could be quite possible for the third installment to feature characters from "Star Wars" and "The Avengers."

Most of the speculations surfacing online remain unconfirmed. However, fans can expect some news about the game's development to be available soon, with Tetsuya Nomura, the lead developer of "Kingdom Hearts 3", claiming:

"We have some interesting things planned. There will be Kingdom Hearts 3 news, and various things, I think. Development on Kingdom Hearts 3 is going smoothly, but there will also be new announcements connected to it."

No release date has been confirmed, though there are reports of an announcement coming up sometime between June 16 to November 8 this year.
